Susanna Martin Notes -Susanna was baptized in Olney, Buckinghamshire, England September 30, 1621 -She married George Martin, a blacksmith, August 11, 1646 at Salisbury, MA and had eight children. -George Martin sued William Sargent "...for saying his wife was a witch and he would call her a witch." -Charges were dropped against Thomas Sargent, William Sargent, Jr.. was found guilty of accusing Susanna of " fornication and infanticide" -Descriptions of Susanna say that she was short, slightly plump, active, and "of remarkable personal neatness." She was also said to be very outspoken, contemptuous of authority, and defiant in the face of slander which had followed her for years -The Rev. Cotton Mather said about Susanna, "This woman was one of the most impudent, scurrilous, wicked creatures of this world; and she did now throughout her whole trial discover herself to be such a one. Yet when she was asked what she had to say for herself, her chief plea was that she had led a most virtuous and holy life." -Allowed no counsel, she was her own lawyer, and her answers are remarkable for independence and clearness. She showed herself to be a woman of more than ordinary talent and resolution." -On April 30, 1692 a warrant was issued for Susanna's arrest on a charge of witchcraft and she was arrested an May 2nd -During her preliminary examination the at same day, she vigorously answered the charges against her. When the " afflicted girls" began having fits, she laughed out loud -She refused to express any thoughts on what may have ailed the girls but bluntly stated that she didn't think they were bewitched. Her further testimony show that she realized the seriousness of her situation and she adamantly maintained her innocence. -n June 26, 1692 her trial began. Susanna pleaded not guilty, but in the end she was found guilty and condemned to death. -On Tuesday, July 19, 1692 Susanna Martin, Sarah Good, Rebecca Nurse, Sarah Wilde, and Elizabeth Howe were taken from their cells, put into a cart and driven up the rocky road to Gallows Hill. -Susanna was not among those whose attainder was lifted. -Plaque reads: "Here stood the house of Susanna Martin. An honest, hardworking, Christian woman. Accused as a witch, tried and executed at Salem, July 19, 1692. A martyr of superstition." http://www.rootsweb.com/~nwa/sm.html Susanna Martin Evidence Trial - chief accuser was Magistrate -Marcy Lewis cried out, she hath hurt me a great many times and pulls me down. Then Martin laughed again. Mary Walcott saith this woman hath hurt me a great many times. -Eliz Hubbard was afflicted and then the Marshall who was by her said she (Martin) pinched her hard. Several of the afflicted cried out they saw her upon the beam. -Then Mercy Lewis and all many of the rest were afflicted. John Indian fell into a violet fit and said it was that woman, she bites, she bites, and then she was biting her lips -WARRANT: high suspicion of sundry acts of Witchcraft donne or committed by her upon ye Bodys of Mary Walcot, Abigail Williams, Ann Putnam and Mercy Lewis of Salem village or farmes whereby great hurt and damage hath beene donne to ye bodys of said persons according to complt of Capt. Martin: If I were such a person I would tell you the truth. Magistrate: How comes your appearance just now to hurt these? Martin: How do I know? Martin: I dare not tell a lie if it would save my life. -Witnesses Sarah Vibber, Sworn Mary Walcott, Sworn Mr. Samuel Parris, Sworn Elizabeth Hubbard Mercy Lewis

science biome

slide2 soil fertility the soil’s nutrient is poor and acidic. Soil does not contain a loot of nutrients The Soil decomposes quickly and the soils tend to drain. Now covers less than 6% of Earth’s land surface slide3 Weather Temperature In the Tropical the temperatures are warm, the weather is wet, and this results a lot of plant growth. The moist weather is from the wind patterns and a lot of precipitation. The rainforest receives 200-600cm of rain. Most of the tropical are near the equator so that’s why the temperatures are warm. The temperature in the tropical is about 20-25C or 68-93F. Provides 40% of Earth’s oxygen. slide 6 Plants The plants in the rainforest have made many adaptations to their environment. With 200-600cm of rain each year, plants have adapted themselves to shed water off their leaves so the branches won’t break from the weight of the water. Many plants have drip tips and grooved leaves, and some leaves also have oily coatings to make the water slide off. Tree in the upper canopy have have smaller leaves than the larger leaves in the lower canopy level. The lower canopy has larger leaves because it’s hard for them to get sunlight when there’re many trees getting most of the light in the upper canopy. Make up 40% of oxygen on Earth. Used for new drugs and medicines that fight disease and illnesses Emergent- giant trees of the rainforest Roots of shallow trees can make a thick carpet floor on the soil’s surface. slide 7 www.lueplanetbiomes.org slide 8 Layers of the rainforest Upper Canopy Has 60-130ft. trees that grow above the forest. Emergent trees are located here, they have a few trees and smooth straight trunks. The way their roots grow is very shallow, and for support their great size they grow buttresses that are able to spread 30ft . Light is easily available Most animals live in upper canopy because there’s so much light and energy that can make many nutrients. Their leaves contain “drip sprouts” that lets rain shed off the leaves, and keeps them dry to prevents mold in a humid atmosphere. Under story/ Lower Canopy Has 60ft. trees that are made of a canopy tree’s trunks, plants, shrubs, and small trees. Little air movement causing high humidity. The view is dark and always in the shade Thick layers of moss coat the branches and trunks on trees Many amphibians live in the under story such as frogs, snakes, reptiles, chameleons, ants, birds, bats, etc. slide 9 Ground/ Forest floor Very dark and usually completely shaded by plants Doesn’t get a lot of light, results a few bushes and herbs on the forest floor The top soil is thin, weak, and has poor quality because of the lack of sunshine Plants on the ground get nutrients when litter falls from the high levels of the rainforest, and gets broken down my decomposers, heat, and humidity, and then the organic matter is absorbed by the trees shallow roots. Animals that could be seen living on the ground are, rodents, jaguar, ……. Animal life More species live in the tropical than anywhere else in the world. The largest group of animals living in the tropical are insects, that are butterflies, mosquitoes, camouflaged stick insects, ants, caterpillars, dragonflies, moths, and more. The largest place with the most variety of plant and animal is the the Amazon river basin, and the second is the islands of Southeast Asia, and the lowest is Africa. Many people try to protect the large number of species of the rainforest from human destruction. Hypotheses on why there are more species in the tropical, than any other biome. The location of the tropical rain forests are near the equator where it’s always warm,. Its was not covered in ice during the last ice age,so the species had more time to evolve. The tropical plants keep their leaves all year round, and creates a bigger food supply for many organisms. Provides a lot of different habitats for diverse organisms.

english paper

"Ode to Man" and "What a piece of work is man" share a few similarities. They both state that man is only defeated by death. A qoute from "Ode to Man," "He has made himself secure- from all but one. In the late wind of death he cannot stand." This explains how man can be protected from anything in the world except for death. In "what a piece of work is man" it says, "And yet to me, what is this quintessence of dust?" This says that man is only a pile of dust that blows along with the wind. We come and go throught the world like a pile of neverending dust. The man itself dies, but a new generation continues. From Antigone,"Yeilds to his prows, the huge crests bear him high." This quote describes how everything in the world looks up to man and praises him in all of his glory. This is similiar to Hamlet's quote "What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving, how express and admirable in action, how like an angel in apprehension, how like a god: the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals." This quote means, man is a wonderful piece of work with great intelligence in the shape of an angel and god, that contains the most perfection out of all the animals.
My view on humanity is that we are all part of a life cycle. We may seem like the highest group of spieces in the world but i think we are equal with the plants, animals, and nature itself, because we use their resources to help stay alive, and so do they. We play a bigger part in the world because we have the most intelligence out of everything else in the world. We hold most of the power because of the knowledge we gain overtime. Some of our weaknesses is when we have to much power, we tend to abuse our powers. For example, Adolf Hitler had gained a lot of power, and convince the people of his country that jewish people were bad and must be destroyed. He used his power for evil when he could have used it for good, and we could have prevented WWII that lead to millions of tragic deaths.
In conclusion, Man usually has most of the power in the world, but i see it as man taking more advantage over the world than the other organisms. Man can do many things with its intelligence such as building shelter, weapons, food, technology, transportation, and more. In the end we all die a death we can never defeat, so different people all over the world die when a newborn baby comes to life to start a new generation in life. we are part of a life cycle that evolves around the world, where the world holds the most power of all, because without the worlds nutrients we wouldn't be able to survive.

                                                                  \

Dear Ms. Palmer,

I have picked a bad habit of mine to change for seven days from the ideas I have listed for this business letter project. Since I have finally chosen my bad habit to change, I will try out a plan I have made for myself to start the phase of the project. My weakest category of the wellness wheel is career. I don’t have a strong plan for myself that will help in the future to succeed in life. I have a small idea of what I want to be, but I’m not sure if I will be successful well in that profession because many people are trying to get into that business, and I could easily be beaten. I don’t want to let my parents down and get a job that will make them and me unhappy. The highest on my wellness wheel is social, and spiritual.

And in the middle is physical, emotional, and intellectual. I like to play sports and that keeps up my physical side, I believe in God and go to church every Sunday, and that keeps up my spiritual category. When I am feeling sad, or uncomfortable, I go to my closest friends and they comfort me, because it’s sometimes hard for me to keep a really strong feeling inside. I like to be with close friends and family, because I would be very lonely and depressed if I never had them, and I cherish all of the friends and family I have with me. Math helps me keep up my intellectual because I have to look at the problem and break it down into parts to solve the question, this helps me look at the problems I face in real life, like when I read a book or watch a movie, I try to remember what happened before, and see how the scene came up and enjoy the book or movie even more.

I want to spend less time on the computer and TV during school days. It’s hard to spend less time on the computer and TV at my house, because the table I do homework on is in front of the computer, and my TV is right next to me on my right side. I’m surrounded and it’s hard to resist. I feel that this plan will help me in school, and reduce the risk of getting glasses.

To achieve this goal, I can put a blanket over my TV and computer and that could help me ignore the computer and TV. I can also put the mouse and keyboard away so I will be too lazy and tired after school to get get the keyboard and mouse and plug it into the computer and this can prevent me for going online. My family especially my dad will like the idea of spending less time on the computer, because he is tired of seeing me online when he looks through my room, and my brothers won’t care that much because they have their own computer. My friends however won’t like the idea of ma spending less time on the computer, because that will mean, less time talking with them. My reward for this new behavior will be better grades, more sleep, and more time for myself.

I don’t think I will be very successful on this project because there’s another computer in my brothers room to go on if I don’t feel like plugging the keyboard and mouse back in. I will try my best to reach my goal and hopefully my plan will work. I know that I should spend less time on the computer, and I should remind myself what the consequences are for spending too much time on the computer, and remind myself about the rewards I will get. If you have any more ideas to help me with my goal, I will appreciate it very much; you can reach me at my locker, #1031 in between classes.

                                                                                       Sincerely,

                                                                                                 Olivia Nguyen
